Whew! Close One There!

Author: Jim | Filed under: Announcements

As many of you may have noticed, theNetFool.com was actually UNREGISTERED for more than 24 hours! I wanted to thank those of you who came to me and let me know this right away, as you may have saved the blog’s existence altogether.

As it turns out, my registrar was sending “domain name expiration” notices to an old email account of mine that I had completely forgotten about (heck, who uses Yahoo Mail anymore anyways? ) and my domain name expired on October 11th because I didn’t notice! Luckily for me, it seems that Name Cheap, the guys I work with, have a holding policy and I was able to smooth talk my way into extending the term of my registration out another year without any penalties.

Site Owners: Make sure that your emails are current! EVERYWHERE!

The lesson really isn’t to make sure your domain names expire, because any registrar will send you updates up to wazoo… my problem wasn’t that I wasn’t getting the alerts, but that I wasn’t “getting” the alerts.

At the very least, it was definitely a wake up call for me as to how much I really didn’t want to let this thing go… so I’ll be posting more often from here on out. I have a few plans in the mix, but I will round out the longest 30-day blog building challenge in the history of mankind first and foremost. Stay bullish on the net!

  4. Don’t count on the registrar. I had a single domain registered through Moniker, and even though my contact info was correct, I NEVER received a reminder. And of course, when I discovered my domain had expired, they tried extorting me with some outrageous price.

Eventually, they let the domain go, and I just repurchased it through GoDaddy (Where I hold my other 60+ domains), and life is good once again. GD gives me TONS of warnings when I’m coming due for expiration. :)

  9. Automatic subscription renewal every month is the best option i used for my domain.

  10. This happened to me while I was overseas for two months. One of my domains expired and I only realised when I visited my website to realise it was now owned by someone else :???:

  11. im sure if it had gone longer than 24 hours, then some asswipe would’ve easily bought it and probably sell it to you for a really huge price.. im glad this domain is still yours..

  28. I’m happy that the whole affair didn’t end with something horrible. As far as expiration notifications are concerned, of course it is the domain owners duty to provide correct contact details, but still I had a similar case when even with current email address I didn’t recieve any notification whatsoever. Personally, I recommend keeping track of your domain expiration date and not leaving anything in hands of the registrar.

  37. The same similar thing happen to me. I had around 55 domains for a client that I recently tried to cancel before their renewal date. I canceled them but I never received the final cancellation authorization email because the email I had with the registrar was an old email I didn’t use. Needless to say when it was time for renewal they were automatically renewed. Most, if not all registrars have a final email authorization after initial cancellation. So, if you didn’t get the final email you may be billed. Fortunately, It was shown that I made the attempt and the refund was given to me, but it took many calls an lots of wasted to time. ;-)

  38. I’m too

  41. Wow that was a close one, good thing you were able to get your site back. Its always good to make sure all of your emails are the ones that you check often, you never know when you can get an important email that you didnt even know existed.

  42. That was lucky glad you caught it in time would have been a real shame to loose a cool domain

    Thanks Again ;-)

  43. Thank you for providing noobs like me with useful information on your blog. That was a close shave however. You’ve almost deprived us of this privilege:)

  44. Any chance you are going to post again some time soon?

  45. That has happened to me and I was in a panic only because it was my first year after buying the blog and very new to the blogging world. I thought that this was the end, when I was talking to GoDaddy they explained to me that the reality of someone buying that domain name that quickly would probably not happen. But who wants to take that kind of chance. I know I seem to panic every time I read an article like this, I get thinking ” now when is my —–due and when does the —— expire. So thanks for posting this to help all of us remember that there is always something that is either ready to expire or there is somewhere we have to be. jj
