Day 24: Submitting Your Website to the Best Web Directories on the Net

Author: Jim | Filed under: 30-Day Blogging, Web Development

When you are first building your blog, there is no doubt in my mind that you will stumble across what are known as “blog directories.” Personally, I’ve seen recommendations to submit my site to X directory literally hundreds of times… and it used to be one of the easiest and fastest way to boost your traffic and search engine ranking positions (SERPs). The question now is: are web directories still useful?

While I hate to give this kind of ambiguous answer, the truth is that people aren’t really sure. Google is constantly revamping the way that it looks at websites, how they appear in search results, etc. However, if I had to bet money I would say that web directories are still a viable way to artificially boost the number of high quality incoming links to your blog. Sites with more links, and links of higher authority (AKA Google Pagerank), are better placed in Google results. Sounds like something we want, eh? Let’s get to submitting!

The (“Self-Proclaimed”) KING of Web Directories

One of the most frustratingly powerful directories out there on the internet is a place called DMOZ.org, the Open Directory Project. These guys are Google’s favorite directory, and will give your website a huge Pagerank 8 link back if you can get yourself listed. They don’t take cash for positions, and professional bloggers try everything from bargaining with the site’s official editors to paying $100s to people who claim to offer successful listings in order to get into this self-proclaimed dominant directory. You don’t need to bother with that… you just need to cross your fingers and submit your blog yourself for free!

How to Submit Your Website to a Directory

There are two methods to submitting your website: do it yourself, or hire a freelance worker to do it for you. I recommend the latter, as people will typically submit your website themselves dozens of times over for just a few dollars. However, many people like to save on costs (I know I sure did when I first started out) and do this themselves.

To hire a freelancer: Check out the webmaster forums at DigitalPoint or Warrior Forums. You’ll find loads of professionals ready and willing to do this.

To do it yourself: Since we are going to be filling out a lot of forms, it might be smart to automate the process with a form filler such as Roboform. You will then want to fill in on each site you enlist to things such as: Site Name, Keywords, Description, Link.

Always remember that the higher Pagerank you see on the web directory, the more powerful it is. I really wouldn’t bother submitting to anything less than Pagerank 3, as these directories won’t add much of anything to your search engine positions. I won’t be providing a list of “suggested directories” for you to apply to, as it would be more useful for you to search through Google for a few lists on your own. If you have a few bucks, the second best directory is the Yahoo! Directory… but I would argue it is overpriced. ;)

Try your hand at getting listed in high-PR web directories, because it will potentially give life to your Google-based traffic from the start!

I’ll confirm, DMOZ is a hard directory to get in if your site is just another of thousands others. Bring some unique spin and polish to the table and their editors might just add your site.

Dmoz kinda sucks, you just can’t get in there normally.

I agree and am not a big fan of Dmoz, but you have to admit that a backlink from them would be very strong for you blog, so for that point, I will continue to try and get my niche sites listed in their directory.

I think it is worth the hassle.

DMOZ is free, but the difficulty to be listed is such a great price to bet. You really need to make your blog stand above of millions of blogs to be listed there.

Hello! First-time commenter, long time fan
What I don’t get about DMOZ is if they’re looking for quality sites, then why are there so many awful sites listed? I mean, the few times I’ve actually used it to research things most of the sites I found were terribly designed and filled with spam.
It kind of makes me think that their selection is kind of random… or at least on how swamped with submissions they are at the time.

Ive found that its becoming more difficult to find quality directories, it seems most directories with pagerank are from older domains that expired and people are grabbing them up and putting directories on them trying to earn money.

On another note I have a new affiliate program that maybe your blog could benefit from by making some extra money, we sell link building services that sell quite well because we sell them at affordable rates. If your interested in the details check http://www.nationsubmit.com/affiliate.php. Just thought that I would let you know about this opportunity to make some extra money.

Thanks for the very timely post. I recently found conflicting data on directory submissions. Some are saying that Google doesn’t recognize directory listings and others say the opposite – who to trust? From my perspective, generating one way links from any site with PR value is key. Personally, I look at the page within the directory where my site will be listed. If it has PR value of any kind then I submit my site.

  19. Mr.Make Money Online July 21, 2009 at 10:04 pm #

Yes!!! I love your idea of submitting to different directories regularly. do you think directory submission is necessary for a blog with descent traffic (e.g. Jimvesting.com) :) I have submitted my site to DMOZ one year back and still waiting to get approval from them. DMOZ really sucks…

DMOZ doesn’t suck, the site that is rejected sucks. Now if the site that you have is not a quality site and fails to meet the listing guidelines of DMOZ, then surely it’ll be dumped. Just that your site doesn’t get listed need not mean that the directory is bad. I remember that story in which the fox says, “the grapes are sour”!!!

Another nice post Jim. I agree submitting your website to directories can help you out, but at the same time, be careful not to submit your website to too many that aren’t of value, because in turn, this will actually hurt your page rankings.

Just out of curiosity though Jim, are you planning on releasing a section of your site to view all visible 30 posts for the build-a-blog effort once it’s finished? I think it would be a great addition to place.

Dmoz is not a hard directory to get into, they are just careful who they include.

Bottom line if your site adds no value to your niche or the web in general then you wont get in. But if that is the case then not getting into Dmoz will be the least of your worries.
