Blogengage.com Goes Nanners – What NOT to Do to Increase Traffic

Author: Jim | Filed under: Rants & Raves

Normally, the tips we list here are examples of how you can improve your blog or marketing campaigns… new strategies, link optimization, business schemes and investment suggestions. However, every once and awhile we see people slip up, and it is important to point out mistakes.

How to Make Your Subscribers Mad, the BlogEngage Way

This afternoon, I got a virtual hazing email from my good buddy Brian, the owner of BlogEngage.com. Blog Engage is a semi-popular social media community that offers bloggers the ability to suggest their articles to a community of webmasters from around the world. It is an overdone idea that Brian so happen to execute very well, thus jumping Blog Engage to a decent position in the online market (though nowhere close to touching StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Mixx, etc.).

But enough background, let’s get back to that email:

“I wrote a post today that expresses my frustration with the recent lack of involvement from our members. I encourage you all to read it as it is very important this message gets across. We must stick together and vote for each other. http://www.blogengage.com/blogger/are-you-a-valuable-member-of-our-community/. Please read it with care in mind that we need to work together to make a difference in the blogosphere.

Thanks,
Brian”

Really!? If people aren’t actively involved on your website/blog/etc., should you really send out a massive email telling people how it is their fault? No. The proper way to handle any drop off of traffic… is to do a better job grabbing traffic and encouraging your readers to get more involved. Run a promotion, increase advertising, change your platform, do something productive! Writing a flame post about how your community is falling apart because people aren’t trying their hardest to make you money is rediculous.

I expected some kind of promotion or message of encouragement, and what I saw was an angry blog post. Brian is one of my blogging buddies, so I want to say that he typically does a great job, but it is unacceptible to end any message to your readers by saying:  ”stop being a lamer” (no, I’m not making this up).

A Point of Confusion — The Site is Fine!

It is one thing to get frustrated because things aren’t going your way in terms of internet traffic, but at Blogengage.com, they have actually been doing a great job growing traffic. Take a look at this long-term traffic chart sponsored by Alexa.com:

As you can clearly see, traffic is on a big uptick from 2009 levels. Taking this, I would never have accepted a mass text from the owner telling me that the level of activity from his community ain’t good enough.

Maybe the Problem Ain’t So Obvious

Perhaps Brian was just talking about spammers, but even so… this is a problem with the model of his community, not the community! If I can log into Blogengage, submit my content, and walk away with exactly the same end result as if I was an active user, then why the heck would I waste my time being active? This is like if Twitter were to say “okay, everyone gets 2000 followers, and only 2000 followers, forever” — who would continue to care? After all, you are going to reach the same amount of people regardless of what you do. I suggest you think about what you are doing wrong rather than blaming people for taking advantage of the obvious hole in the system.

This kind of public service announcement is more likely to put a bigger hole in your traffic than improve it, so why bother making your readers mad?

Bottom Line: If you run a blog or a popular website of any kind, never ever ever ever send a mass email to your community belittling them for not trying harder. As a webmaster, it is your responsibility to make your community want to stay active. Brian is a great guy, and BlogEngage.com is a site you should check out and work with if you are looking for more traffic, but this kind of example is a great one to demonstrate an improper marketing tactic and how to avoid it.

    Yes, solid advice.

The best way to get followers is to attract them. Very few people do things by force and those who do usually do it regretably.

The formula to attract followers? Provide value, value, value. When done, provide more value. Follow that up with frequent engagement. Do this daily for months or maybe years, and your following will come to you. It never works the other way around.

Great point Jim. I was a member there for a while, but even with my post staying on the front page for about 2 days – I think I got maybe 20 visitors. But I did log back in to give this post a vote. I hope it hits the front page and generates the discussion it deserves.

I agree that the tone of Brian’s e-mails did raise a few eyebrows. The post and the e-mail should have been a bit toned down but he has made his point quite strongly so and there is nothing we can do about it except to participate in the ongoing discussion.

I try to be active on Blog Engage but i cannot always be active. His new thing that you must vote on at least three articles will decrease people voting on good articles but whatever article so you wont get kicked out

    Interesting points on both sides.

I like Blog Engage precisely because it does seem to encourage more interaction among members of the site, and to discourage spammers. I haven’t been as active on the site as I should be – so I took Brian’s email as an expression of frustration and a stern reminder that it takes some involvement beyond self-promotion to make the site work. (I didn’t take offense, because I’ve done absolutely NO self-promotion there, either. I just haven’t shown up much, lately.)

I agree that scolding your subscribers probably isn’t the best business model ever, but I’ve also seen it used as an effective tactic for weeding out the folks who aren’t really interested in participating in a community-oriented site. It’ll be interesting to see if it works for Blog Engage or not. I checked in and read – and voted – on a number of articles, tonight, after work.

    Including this one.

I simply do not see this strategy ever being positive in any way for Blog Engage. I see little positive about it, and it seems like he is trying to give someone a slap on the wrist that has done nothing wrong. I typically submit my content and then leave, without touching anything else, because there is nothing in their system to stop me. If he wanted to fix the problem, he should have done that, rather than lashing out at the subscribers that make the whole thing tick, eh?

Well i could not have said it any better i think there is a deep undelying isuue there. I used blogengage i like the site but never had much luck with it in terms of traffic i still submit articles and everytime i go there i will vote for articles. The problem we face with these bookmarking website is that the owners rarely visits the members website so they don’t feel the importance of the site. Thanks for the write up and the link love.

This is why we don’t write while mad, why we’re told to step back and cool off first.

OR, you could now keep a close eye around the sphere for articles like this one all linking back to BE, and their traffic over the net month or two, and decide if he might just be an evil genius. ;)

There is a remaining issue: the blog post is public on the site.

Imagine a new blogger trying to find a “community” to grow his/her blog. I don’t think that they would sign up to blogengage if they found that post, despite the fact that it may be the best community compared to my blog log and blog catalog (the two sites mentioned by Brian). I tend to agree with the other commenters, it should have been toned down.

Was reading the post at blogenage, seriously I am with you on this!

And been quite long since I’ve had a visit here.. remember me, Jim? :)

Not everyone can stay active the whole day and work on promoting other websites. I, for one, have least time to work on blog promotion. Whenever I get some time, I publish my article on social bookmarking and fade away. There is a strong reason here.. everyone likes to promote their own website.

I had a account with blogengage and I am glad they deleted it because I was inactive and submitted my ‘quality’ and unique content. This way they aren’t maintaining the quality but pissing off the users to a larger extent!

Hope Brian listens to this and gets back to the traditional bookmarking rules :)

I can see your point on why a person wouldn’t want to waste their time by being an active user if they get the same benefits as an active user. I believe this is due to the nature of the that kind of community in the first place. And yea, the blogpost was probably not the wisest thing to have done
