While SEO helps, Alexa ranks are a gauge of traffic rather than optimization. Over time, if you are putting out more and more content and your site is properly configured to hit high on Google… you WILL get the traffic and your Alexa will rise

1- be good friend with google , yahoo , bing, aol , alexa and others…
2- good orjinally content
3- keep update your site
4- get many many backlinks..
5- some blog in your site..
never finish….. just keep fresh and clear your web sites…

Alexa is always important for page rank. yes traffic is too but we have to work for alexa as well.

It seems like Alexa would be an outdated tool as it usually attracts techy type websites and not so much everyday type sites?

To find the average traffic of a website (not mine), I am using alexa. I know the result shown is not perfect but comparing to other tools Alexa is a bit more accurate.
